PHOTOGRAPH SERIES
My work explores my childhood and the involvement of the individuals that raised me to answer this question. I seek to highlight the vast effects of substance abuse and the snowball effect it causes to those around. I look to highlight the personal stories of my family members and bring a harsh but intimate reality to the viewer.
Every human we interreact with plays a role whether big or small in our lives. The people I highlight are both family but strangers. Each with their own experiences and losses with addiction. While photographing these works, I spent time trying to empathize with each person to fully understand how they themselves were a story (not just a part of mine.)
In this work, I merge both portraits with conceptual photographs to capture the full scope of the human in which I am highlighting. Having a "golden arm" is a metaphor for intravenous drug use. I pushed and elaborated upon this metaphor in my works and explored the ways I can communicate the identity and loss of each individual.
